A domain is your address on the internet. In Paraguay the local extension is .com.py, and many businesses choose it because it makes clear you are local.
.com.py, .py or .com?
- .com.py is the most used option by Paraguayan companies and shops.
- .py alone is shorter and more prestigious, but has stricter requirements and costs more.
- .com is international. Useful if you target abroad or the .com.py you want is taken.
Who manages Paraguayan domains
Domains ending in .py are managed by NIC-PY, which depends on the National University of Asunción. Every .com.py registration goes through them.
Step by step
- Check availability on the NIC-PY site. Have two or three alternatives ready.
- Prepare the owner details: name or company name, ID or tax number, address, phone and an email you always have access to.
- Complete the request with owner, administrative and technical contacts.
- Pay the registration. It is billed per year.
- Point the domain to your hosting. The technical step: configuring name servers (DNS). Usually done by whoever builds your site.
The most important point: it must be in your name
This is the mistake that costs the most. If whoever builds your website registers the domain under their own name, the domain is not yours. The day you change providers you could lose your address, your email and the ranking you built.
Always require that you or your company are the domain owner, and that they hand you the admin access.
Other common mistakes
- Using an email nobody checks. Renewal notices arrive there.
- Leaving renewal to the last minute. An expired domain can be released and taken by anyone.
- Registering a name too similar to another brand.
